Like New York but without skyscrapers

Budapest is an extremely cosmopolitan city. It's also quite large: much larger than I expected it to be. It felt somewhat like New York City in its level of busy-ness. The culture is young, hip and vibrant--with cafes, galleries and clubs, there is always something going on. Yet it doesn't feel rushed, probably because there is so much open space and so many green parks. Budapest's buildings are beautiful, and her views from atop the hills of Buda are some of the more peaceful I've seen anywhere.

Budapest is a large city yet is very suited to exploring on foot. There is always something to see, no matter what side of the Danube you`re on. Some of my fondest memories of Budapest are of just walking the avenues.

After climbing the hills of Buda, our muscles were sore, tired, and ready for a soak. We went to the Hotel Gellert to pamper ourselves in the curing waters. I felt self-conscious about my nakedness at first, but no one cares, especially not the fat Hungarian grandmas strutting around for all to see. Soon I didn't care either.

The shallow `pools` are slightly different temperatures, so you circulate between them to get the best effect. I almost fell asleep looking up at the gorgeous tile work on the ceilings, but I got a real wake-up once I plunged into the well of ice cold water that is supposed to get your heart going.

Ah, the Blue Danube! I had dinner on a boat on the river, and I count it as one of my best memories of Budapest. The sun was going down, the food was excellent, and the views were fabulous.

Just some building I liked.

In Keleti Station, leaving Budapest for Salzburg. I met a French guy while waiting,
who inexplicably called me up at work one year later in America. Very strange.
